Slaton Business Districts

There are a number of business districts throughout Slaton, Texas, some of which will be of interest to tourists and regular visitors and others of interest to other businesses, which are mainly industrial areas.

We can identify five specific business districts that mainly contain shops, other types of retail sales, restaurants, lodging, and interesting industrial. These include South Highway 84, 9th Street, Division Street, Downtown and the town square, and Industrial Drive/Railroad Avenue..

The first area is along either side of South Highway 84 that wraps itself around the western and southern parts of the city. Entering this part of Slaton coming from Lubbock, the first businesses are car dealerships, followed by lodging. The lodging includes a Knights Inn motel and the Twin Pines RV Park. However, a little further on we come to Slaton Plaza Shopping Center which also has some other businesses nearby.

If one continues around South Highway 84, we find other businesses such as Pitforks and Smokerings BBQ, which is just off the 9th Street Exit.

The First Slaton Exit coming in from Lubbock is for Industrial Drive, which is really one of the most historic parts of Slaton. Here, you drive along beside a number of railroad tracks on the north side of the street where trains may be stacked up waiting for departure. On the south side of the street, you soon find the historic Englewood Cemetery as well as the original part of the town. This road takes a right bend leading into 9th Street but going straight puts you on Railroad Avenue. There are numerous old industrial sites but soon this road leads to the Historic Slaton Harvey House.

There are many more streets with scattered businesses than we will cover here. For example, the second exit to Slaton is the Woodrow Road exit, and it does have a few businesses such as the commercial cookie factory for Slaton Bakery. It also slides along the northern part of Englewood Cemetry before ending at Industrial Drive.

However, after that is the Division Street exit where the Slaton Plaza Shopping Center is located.

This Slaton Plaza Shopping Center really could be considered as the western end of a small business area that extends east on Division Street for several more blocks. After going under the overpass on Division Street, we find a bank, a Ford dealership, and other stores including a Pizza Hut, a local restaurant named JJ’s Cafe, and an auto supply store.

And while there are no more businesses on Division Street until one gets to 9th Street, there is an elementary school, several churches, and the Historical Mercy Retreat Center, which was once Mercy Hospital.

The last exit is for 9th Street, which is commercial from beginning to end, though businesses are mixed in somewhat with a few houses, It becomes more industrial as it nears the railroad district. From its southern end, the street starts with Pitforks and Smokerings BBQ just 9th Street on the South Highway 84 access road. Then there are a variety of businesses which include liquor stores, a salon, and other service businesses.  As it nears Division Street, there are more interesting retail establishments including at least one restaurant. From there, it extends into the town square which can be considered its own business district. This is where the historic Slaton Bakery is located on 9th Street. Passing through the town square, 9th Street we next find the library and Senior Citizens building with the post office across the street. Down from there is Heirloom Flowers and Goods just off 9th street, and a little ways further is the Casa De Miguel Mexican Food restaurant with the Tin Top event venue just across 9th Street.

Soon, 9th Street becomes mostly industrial as it turns into Industrial Drive at the northern edge of town.

The final business district is the historic Slaton, Texas town square and the few blocks surrounding it. We will not go into a big discussion as we already have a page devoted to this area.
