Sites to Visit
Sites to visit in Slaton include three very significant museums, including the very substantial Texas Air Museum and the unique Harvey House, as well as seven interesting historical landmarks. One could spend considerable time on the town square, visiting the Slaton Museum, shopping at the Antique Mall, and having a good authentic German lunch at the 1809 Restaurant, or pastries at one of the oldest bakeries in Texas.
Additionally, there is the old railroad district where the Santa Fe Railroad initially founded the city, and many old, fine, and sometimes unusual homes elsewhere in the city. A ride down West Garza Street, except for the newer cars, would be like time travel back to the 1930s and 40s, with some houses dating almost back to the founding of the city in 1911.
Further exploration can discover other interesting sites to see, ones that are not well known beyond the confines of Slaton. For example, there is the old two-story hotel at the far eastern end of Railroad Avenue that was once a hotel for the black workers hired by the Santa Fe Railroad. And ask to see the basement of the Harvey House, where the Harvey Girls once roller-skated about through small rooms in a circuit we will probably never discover.
