Museums in Slaton
Museums in Slaton and be surprising. Farm to market road 400 begins its southern journey in Slaton and runs through Idalou just east of Lubbock before terminating at its northern end in Plainview. Just off this highway and the caprock, not too far north of Slaton in a canyon is a popular gun range known as Rustic Range, and a short distance further east along the canyon is one of the most popular biking circuits used by many Lubbock cyclists.
Many people use FM 400 to access these areas, and in the process drive by the small Slaton Municipal Airport. What they don’t expect to see is a Tomcat Warplane, a combat helicopter, or an early Airforce jet trainer. But those aircraft are just the tip of the iceberg because this is the Texas Air Museum with many more aircraft not so visible and several buildings dedicated to other displays.
This is one of three interesting museums, some of which are unique to this area. One, the Harvey House, is very train related but even the city museum on the square has train-related exhibits, as well as exhibits related to Slaton homes around the turn of the 20th century, among others.
But look around. There are small museum displays elsewhere, such as in the Slaton Bakery. These businesses are old and they have a history that they enjoy showing others.
The Slaton museum is small but contains interesting displays of everyday life in Slaton around the turn of the century and later.
The Harvey House Slaton is a museum where one may spend the night. It’s also a Bed and Breakfast.
Slaton’s Air Museum is a hidden gem of war birds and other exhibits located at the Slaton Municiple Airport.
