Model Train Stuido

Slaton is a train town. There’s no mistaking that, and one of the most interesting places in town is the Model Railroad Studio. It’s a studio in the sense that it’s constructed very much like a piece of art, or in its case, a long building of artwork made up of hundreds of smaller pieces of art.

Along the tracks of this railroad we find many towns of West Texas and even New Mexico where the Santa Fe train once provided much of the transporation of both goods and services. Here, we find faithful models of buildings that once stood, though not particularly where they stood at the time as by neccessity the sense are squashed together. Here, one travels through turn of the 19th century Slaton, Lubbock, Shallowater, littlefield, Farwell and other towns.

It has a WOW factor, created by a retired pediatrician and others over what must have been years.

And along with the model trains there’s more, including artwork, signs, railroad memorabilia and even a real train control station.

It has no regular hours and is open by appointment, usually to groups such as the boy scouts or the Texas Tech Model Train Club, among others.

Notation: I accidentally caught the owner as he was leaving one day and did a quick walk around taking some photos in haste. I do plan on returning with lights and tripod to do a better job of it in the near future. Look for updates.
