The Slaton Bakery is not the oldest continuously open bakery in Texas. That honor would probably go to the Naegelin’s German Bakery located in New Braunfels and dating to 1868. However, few other bakeries are as old as the Slaton Bakery which turns 100 years old this year, having been open since 1923. No bakery in Houston, Dallas, Ft. Worth, or Austin that we have found is older. It is truly a gem of the Texas Panhandle.

Established in 1923 when two local bakeries consolidated, it was Initially a wholesale bread factory and was responsible for introducing sliced hamburger and hotdog buns to the state of Texas.

Today the Slaton Bakery is a multi-faceted establishment including a seating area, the main bakery, as well as a commercial cookie bakery that distributes their products to such establishments as H-B-E Grocery stores.  Nevertheless, a visit to their retail outlet on the historic Slaton, Texas town square is a delight, where one can uncover just about any wonderful baked good.
