JJ’s Cafe in Slaton, Texas is a throwback dinner, but a wonderful one.

Three obvious things people learn about Slaton very quickly are that it has a whole lot of history, it’s full of warm, friendly people, and those people love great food. There aren’t a lot of homegrown restaurants in town, but the ones it does have are exquisite.

A short distance down Division Street from South Highway 84, one finds this restaurant and most of the comfort food anyone could hope for.   It’s not unusual to find farmers and other blue-collar workers here who enjoy a hearty meal.

At first glance, JJ’s Cafe is a simple dinner, but its 20-plus years in business tell a different story. Slaton’s history describes population declines and the recent pandemics, it’s held on because it serves some of the best comfort food one could ever want. It’s simple fare, but cooked with loving care and the results are not short of amazing.
