Englewood Cemetery

Englewood Cemetry is a city property for Slaton, Texas, and has been designated as a historical site by the Texas Historical Commission as a Historic Texas Cemetery. It is situated in the northwest part of the city with Industrial Drive as its northern boundary. Most of the older graves are on the western side of the cemetery and around the caretaker’s shed.

The Slaton Cemetery came into existence with the first burial of an infant, J.W. Obrian, on May 10, 1912. Since that original beginning, there have been five additions of land between the years of 1914 and 1972. The land area encompassed at present is 49 acres.

The historic marker Reads:

Representing the Santa Fe Railroad, W.B. Storey, Jr. Bought the future townsite of Slaton on April 15, 1911. The Railroad’s plans included a roundhouse, switch lines, depot, and Harvey House, making Slaton a center for area rail transport. Rail employees and others quickly populated the city, which was incorporated in October 1912. By that time, residents had established this cemetery with the burial of infant J.W. Ohrion earlier in the year. Among the thousands of graves here are several unmarked burials in a potter’s field and veterans of military conflicts dating to the Civil War.
